HOCKEY IN HIGH HEELS: HOOKING UPHOCKEY IN HIGH HEELS: HOOKING UP

Now that we are knee deep into the Stanley Cup, it is time for more hockey lessons. As always, I am sharing what each term means, along with  what I initially thought things meant.

Hooking-What It Means: This is when a player impedes the progress of an opponent by “hooking” him with his stick. (Basically, preventing him from scoring)

What I Thought It Meant: I had an image of acts being removed from a stage and thought the bad players were removed from the rink.

Interference-What It Means:  This is when a player interferes with or impedes the progress of an opponent who does not have the puck. It is also assessed to a player who deliberately knocks the stick out of an opponent’s hand or who prevents a player who has dropped his stick (or any other piece of equipment) from picking it back up. (So, basically it is like schoolyard bullying)

What I Thought It Meant: Pretty self explanatory…wow I know something about hockey!

Kneeing-What It Means:  This is when a player fouls an opponent with his knee.

What I Thought It Meant: Again, this was pretty easy to figure out.

Roughing-What It Means:  This is when a player strikes another opponent in a minor altercation that the referee determines is not worthy of a major penalty. (Pre-Jerry Springer fight?)

What I Thought It Meant: I thought it was the equivalent to a West Side Story fight mixed with Jerry Springer.

Slashing-What It Means:  This is when a player hits an opponent with his stick, or “slashes” him, either to impede his progress or cause injury. (So, equivalent to hitting someone with a wooden spoon?)

What I Thought It Meant: I had a Zorro image in my mind.

Unknown-2

Spearing-What It Means: This is when a player stabs at an opponent with the blade of his stick, whether he makes contact or not. (So it is just poking someone?)

What I Thought It Meant: I kind of figured it was this, but it made me think of that ‘I’m Not Touching You’ Sunny D. commercial from about 15 years ago.

Tripping-What It Means:  This is when a stick or any portion of a player’s body is used to cause an opposing player to fall.

What I Thought It Meant: Self explanatory.

More lessons soon! Stay tuned.
