tour de france 2017

By Katie Haskins

Stage type: Individual Time Trial

Length: 14 km/8.7 miles

Weather: Rain

Welcome to Stage 1 in Dusseldorf, Germany. Yes, Germany. It’s somewhat common in recent years to start the Tour somewhere other than France.

We start out with 22 teams and 198 riders over a short individual time trial. Now normally, nothing too exciting happens with a time trial. But today’s weather made the roads slippery, especially around corners. There were several falls with riders crashing into the barriers along the course. Included in this was Alejandro Valverde and Ion Izagirre who became the first casualties of this year’s race.

The winner of the stage, and the first person to wear the leader’s yellow jersey was Geraint Thomas from Team Sky. He won in 16:04.
