8/8 Yankees @ Rays – Doubleheader

BASEBALL IN HIGH HEELS: TV ALERT

Game 1 brought Yankees ace Gerrit Cole to the mound against Tyler Glasnow. Both pitchers got out of the first inning with only one hit for Cole from Yandy Diaz. Top of the second, two singles and a walk would load the bases for the Yankees, where they would remain. Tampa only gets a double for their efforts in the inning.

First damage done in the top of the third. Aaron Judge hits a single to left, followed by a home run to center by Mike Ford. 2-0 Yankees. Two walk, and a double would double the score. 4-0 Yankees.

Top of the fifth, Giancarlo Stanton up first, hit a home run, adding another run for the Bronx Bombers before the Yanks would strand two. Tampa rallies in the bottom of the inning starting with a double from Mike Zunino. With two outs, a passed ball with two outs would move him to third. Ji-Man Choi hits a double of his own allowing Zunino to score. Cole is over 100 pitches at this point, possible fatigue allows the home run to Jose Martinez which would bring the Rays within two. It also knocks Cole out, giving him a no decision, but giving him his 26th straight game without a loss.

Top of the sixth, Aaron Judge hits another home run, bringing home DJ LeMahieu. Chad Green would walk his first two batters of the inning, before a strikeout and a groundout, which would allow a run to score for Tampa.

Yankees would add one more run in the seventh making the final score for this game 8-4 Yankees.

Back at it 30 minutes later.

Michael King on the mound for the Yankees. A double, a strikeout, and a groundout before three consecutive walks would score the first ‘run’ for the Rays. King gets out of the inning with a forceout at second.

The next two innings would only allow one baserunner for New York. Top of the fourth and a pitching change for Tampa. Giancarlo Stanton walks, Gleyber Torres and Luke Voit single, bringing home Stanton and tying the score. Bottom of the inning, King get two outs before walking two. Manager Aaron Boone brings in Luis Avilan who promptly walks the next batter, loading the bases. Austin Meadows hits a single to left field allowing two to score. Rays lead 3-1.

Middle of the fifth, Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames and Boone bet ejected after arguing with the home plate umpire over some high, tight pitches to the Yankees. Rays add on two more in the fifth from a single, hit by pitch, and a walk, before another single brings the add on runs.

The Yankees would rally themselves in the top of the seventh with LeMahieu driving in two runs on a single. The rally would fall short, as did Tampa’s in the first game. Final score 5-3 Rays.

The teams split the doubleheader and will return for one more game at Tropicana Field on Sunday.
