8/30 – Mets & Yankees – Doubleheader

BASEBALL IN HIGH HEELS: TV ALERT

Game 1

Michael King has the ball for the Yankees while Rick Porcello is pitching for the Mets.

The Yankees look to capitalize on the momentum of their win yesterday and DJ LeMahieu starts the bottom of the first inning with a walk. Luke Voit would double, sending LeMahieu to third and Mike Tauchman would groundout, but allow the first run to score.

Moving to the fourth inning, Mets strike back with five singles and driving in two runs to take the lead. King would be replaced after the second out of the inning. Yankees tie the game on a double that allowed Tauchman to score. Game 2-2.

Fifth inning, Mets take the lead again. A single by Michael Conforto gets him on base for a two run homer by Robinson Cano. In the sixth, three straight walks to load the bases. Conforto doubles, sending two runners home. A strikeout and a walk to load the bases. Pete Alonso is hit by a pitch to drive in another run before the third out ends the top half of the inning. 7-2 Mets.

Bottom of the seventh, last inning for a doubleheader, Mike Ford reaches on a throwing error. Brett Gardner lines out sharply to the first baseman who tries to get Ford out as he scrambles back. Mets challenge the safe call, but it’s upheld, only one out that play. A flyout for two outs and it looks like the Yankees will drop the game. Tyler Wade walks and Thairo Estrada is hit by a pitch to load the bases. Voit hits a single that scores to runs and the Yankees are within three with two men on base. Mets change their pitcher to Edwin Diaz, who throws a wild pitch to Aaron Hicks and Estrada scores. Hicks his a line drive that just squeaks over the right field wall for a home run to tie the game at 7.

First extra inning game for the Yankees this season. Conforto starts at second base in the eighth with Chad Green pitching for the Yankees. Three strikeouts and an intentional walk keeps the score tied. Tauchman starts at second for the Yankees in the eighth. Ford walks. Gio Urshela hits a single to right that allows Tauchman to score, just barely avoiding the tag at the plate. The Mets challenge the call, but it’s upheld.

Yankees walk off the win 8-7.

Game 2

Mets are the home team for this game. Deivi Garcia makes his major league debut on the mound for the Yankees.

Tyler Wade gets the runs going in the third with a solo home run to put the Bronx Bombers up 1-0.

Top of the fourth, Yankees look to add more but leave the bases loaded. Bottom of the inning, Mets get their first base runner but can’t convert.

Garcia keeps the Mets off the board until the sixth when he allows a single to Dominic Smith, allowing a run to score from a fielding error earlier in the inning. Game tied at 1 and would remain that way through the end of the seventh and forcing a second extra inning game.

Top of the eighth, Brent Gardner is on base to start, Clint Frazier walks, Urshela flys out and Tauchman is intentionally walked to load the bases. Gary Sanchez pinch hits for Erik Kratz and hits a grand slam to put the Yankees up 5-1.

Mets have a chance to win in the bottom and start off with a walk, and a single that scores a second run for the Mets. Another single loads the bases. A pitching change for the Yankees and Luis Cessa strikes out the Mets’ pinch-hitter.

Yankees win 5-2 and sweep the day.

Yankees host the rays the next three days while the Mets host the Marlins. Both teams will meet again 9/3 to make up the game originally scheduled for 8/23.
