FOOTBALL IN HIGH HEELS: SHOTGUN FOOTBALL?
Just when I thought I was done with the offensive formations, I realized that there was even more that I had yet to learn. Here is the next set of lessons, with my crazy thoughts and humor tossed in for good measure.
Shotgun Formation: No, it has nothing to do with people getting knocked up and being forced to get married. This is instead used on passing downs, which gives the quarterback more time to visualize the defense. He is mostly interested in the secondary’s alignment.
What you see on the field is the quarterback lined up five to seven yards behind the center, who will then make a long snap to him.
So….the quarterback has to know what the defense is about to do and be ready to receive a long snap from the center.
Split back Formation: This is used to confuse the defense as to what the offense is doing. The runners are aligned behind two guards about five yards behind the line of scrimmage, whereas the backfield is not aligned toward any side. This is a great way to keep the defense guessing!
In other words: Keep them guessing!
I Formation: This allows a running back to have a complete vision of his blockers and the defense’s first reaction to the run.
The tailback can go up to seven yards from the line of scrimmage.
The runner can also be in full stride as he gets closer to the line of scrimmage—but only if the blocking holds up.
The bottom line: Get a vision, see a reaction!
