FOOTBALL IN HIGH HEELS: HE KICKS, HE SCORES!

One thing I always wondered about in football was how in the world is the game scored? I knew that a touchdown got them points, but then saw that sometimes more points were added after the touchdown happened. This, of course, led me to even more confusion, so I decided to do some research.

Touchdown: This occurs when the offensive player carries the ball or when a defense player obtains the ball from the other team after recovering a fumble or intercepting a pass. They advance from anywhere on the field and then break the plane of the opponents’ goal line with the ball. They then have to cross the line.

A touchdown can also happen when any player who is inbounds catches or recovers a loose ball behind the opponents’ goal line, usually during a kickoff, punt or fumble.

Touchdowns are worth six points.

Extra Points: This is attempted during the scrimmage down that is awarded after the touchdown. If the kicker kicks the ball between the uprights of the goalpost and above the crossbar from two yards away, a point is awarded.

This is worth one point.

A football game would be even better if these were on the field.

Two Point Conversion: This is when the offense gets the ball on the two yard line and advance it across the goal line. (similar to when they score a touchdown)

This is worth two points.

Field Goals: This happens if the offense cannot score a touchdown and during the last few seconds of a close game. They are usually kicked at the 45 line, but can be done from anywhere and must go through the goal post uprights over the crossbar.

This is worth three points.

Safeties: This usually happens where the offensive ball carrier is tackled behind his own goal line.  It can also happen when a blocked punt goes out of the kicking team’s end zone.

This is worth two points.
