FOOTBALL IN HIGH HEELS: BOWLING FOR FOOTBALL
Happy New Year! For my first 2016 post, I am going to switch gears a bit and talk about college football. I actually live 10 minutes from Penn State, so it is a big part of my life.
Since it is the beginning of the new year, college football teams from all over are participating in different bowls, or playoffs. Since last night, there have been six different games, all of which have had us on the edge of our seats. There are several others that took place earlier in December, but these ones that people watch the most. Here is a look at each one, who is playing whom this year and the results. We will also get my input on what I thought each one meant before learning the truth.
Peach Bowl: This is now officially known as the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl for sponsorship purposes. The annual college football bowl game has been played in Atlanta, Georgia since December 1968. The first three Peach Bowls were played at Grant Field on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta.
What I Thought It Meant: A football game that celebrated the love of peaches. This, of course, made me think of the Cinnamon Festival on the Twin Peaks episode of Psych, which made for some very interesting mental images. (A Twin Peaks/football crossover, anyone?)
Sugar Bowl: This is an annual American college football bowl game played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Sugar Bowl has been played annually since January 1, 1935, and celebrated its 75th anniversary on January 2, 2009.
What I Thought It Meant: I kept picturing a sugar bowl from a tea set and thought it was the prize for winning the game. Yeah, I know….
Orange Bowl: This is an annual American college football bowl game played at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. This bowl game is sponsored by Capital One and part of the College Football Playoff.
What I Thought It Meant: I pretty much had the same thoughts I had during the Peach Bowl lesson.
Cotton Bowl: This is an American college football bowl game that has been held annually since January 1, 1937. Between 1937 and 2009, the game was played at its namesake stadium in Dallas, Texas; in 2010, it moved to Cowboys Stadium in nearby Arlington.
What I Thought It Meant: I am not sure, but all I could think of was Cotton Eyed Joe.
Fiesta Bowl: This is an American college football bowl game played annually at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
What I Thought It Meant: A game and party all in one!
Rose Bowl: This is an annual American college football bowl game, usually played on January 1 (New Year’s Day) at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California.
What I Thought It Meant: I thought it was a football version of The Bachelor and there was a rose ceremony after every quarter.
