2020 Wild Card Series: Yankees @ Indians – Game 2 Recap

BASEBALL IN HIGH HEELS: TV ALERT

A very late ending to the game after a delay of the first pitch to 7:50 and a 30 minute rain delay in the bottom of the first inning.

Masahiro Tanaka pitched in the rain, allowing two doubles that would put the Indians up early with one out. He returned to the mound to continue pitching the first inning. A flyout, a walk, a double and a base hit would put the Indians up 4-0 before Tanaka would be able to get out of the inning.

Second inning, Giancarlo Stanton launches a home run to right center field to get the Yankees on the score board. Tanaka settled down and put the Indians down in order. 4-1 Indians.

The Yankees go down in order in the third. Bottom of the inning starts with a walk. Carlos Santana hits a ball that gets past Luke Voit briefly. He makes the throw to second for the force out. A strikeout and fly out end the inning with no damage done on either side.

Top of the fourth. Aaron Hicks triples on a line drive to center. Delino DeShields seems to read the ball wrong, then slips, allowing it to get to the wall. Voit walks, Stanton walks to load the bases with no one out. 73 pitches and the Indians go to the bullpen. It doesn’t help as Gio Urshela hits a grand slam to left center field. Two more Yankees walk and the Indians change pitchers again. This time, Phil Maton manages to get outs. 5-4 Yankees.

Fifth inning starts off with another walk. Voit hits a double, moving Hicks to third allowing him to score on a sacrifice fly. Urshela hits a comebacker to the pitcher who helps get Voit out in a rundown. Bottom of the inning, Francisco Lindor hits a ball just down the line, getting past a diving Voit. Another walk knocks out Tanaka for Chad Green. Another ball hit deep into the right field corner. The relay throw home makes Gary Sanchez leap and Cesar Hernandez makes it home just before the tag. Game tied at 6.

Another walk to start off the sixth before Sanchez hits a wind-aided home run off the top of the right field wall. 8-6 Yankees.

Another inning, another walk, this time to Luke Voit who’s replaced by Tyler Wade. Gleyber Torres reaches on a fielding error, but the Indians get out of the first half of the inning. With two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, a pinch-hitter, Jordan Luplow replaces possibly the hottest hitter on the Indians, Josh Naylor who went four for four yesterday. Yankees take the opportunity to make a pitching change, bringing in Jonathan Loaisiga. The switch worked out for one team as Luplow hits a game tying double. 8-8.

Eighth inning, a strikeout before two walks for the Yankees. However they were wasted and the Indians comes up to bat. They also start off with two walks. Aroldis Chapman takes the ball for the Yankees. A base hit by Hernandez gives the Indians the lead. A strikeout and a double play get the Yankees out of the inning. 9-8 Indians.

Ninth inning. Stanton walks, and Mike Tauchman pinch-runs for him. Urshela gets a base hit. Torres gets a base hit. The bases are loaded with no one out. Brett Gardner strikes out. Sanchez hits a sacrifice fly to tie the game. DJ LeMahieu, who is hitless so far, sneaks a ball through the legs of the pitcher and between the infielders for a base hit that give the Yankees the lead.

A pitching change for the Indians and Aaron Judge walks to load the bases again. A strikeout to Hicks ends the Yankee threat. Last chance for the Indians as Chapman is back out. A strike out. A ground out. Oscar Mercado strikes out swinging, but the ball gets past Sanchez and Mercado is safe at first. An extra life for the Indians, but it’s wasted as Austin Hedges strikes out swinging.

Yankees win 10-9 and advance to the ALDS where they will take on the Tampa Bay Rays, Monday October 5.
